Dale Halling - Patent Attorney and Entrepreneur

daleHallingPicAbout Dale:

Dale Halling is patent attorney and entrepreneur. As a patent attorney, Mr. Halling, has represented numerous Fortune 500 companies including, McDonnell Douglas, Boeing, Motorola, Ameritech, SBC, MCI, Cypress, and numerous technology start-ups. He has helped his clients obtain patents worldwide. Dale's technical background includes a BS in Electrical Engineering from Kansas State University, and a MS in Physics from the University of Texas at Dallas. Mr. Halling spent several years performing research and development in free space laser communication systems at McDonnell Douglas. After receiving his J.D. from Saint Louis University, Mr. Halling worked as patent/intellectual property counsel for Motorola. He started his own patent law firm in Colorado Springs in 1995. His firm performs patent and intellectual property work for Fortune 500 companies, high-technology start-ups and small business and individuals. He is the author of the book “The Decline and Fall of the American Entrepreneur: How Little Known Laws are Killing Innovation.”

DaleBookAbout Dale's Talk:

As a patent attorney, Halling interfaces with start-up entrepreneurs and has a front-row seat to many exciting innovations.... However, over the course of the last 10 years, he began to see a shift in the types of projects his clients were involved with in the 1990s and 2000s. Clients, in the 90s, would be developing businesses that seemed disruptive or revolutionary... However, the tech downturn of 2000-2001 changed all that. After 2002, the start-up companies that approached him were all looking for narrow niche markets. Now these companies were looking to develop incremental changes and be bought out by an existing company. Obviously something shifted, a change in the marketplace occured. What has happened to innovation ? What is causing these intrepid entrepreneurs to fall back and take safe positions ? So how do we "fix" the system and rewrite the rules for entrepreneurship and jumpstart innovation? Dale will highlight some of the "findings" that led him to write his informative and eye-opening book.

To CSE Group Members:

As you know, Steve Baker was our guest speaker back in February at the CSE Group Meetup and gave a great speech about his start-up experiences in the Travel Industry back in the late 80's.  Well, Steve has started another new company called "International Wellness Centers" and he and a diverse group of executives out of Denver are embarking on a new adventure to develop a wellness center in Belize.  Below is a quick summary from Steve's Pushing Water UpHill Blog Site...

Mike Schmidt - CEO, Ensemble Ventures, LLC

msColor2About Mike:
Entrepreneurial, business development professional with technical marketing and sales skills.  For over 25 years, Mr. Schmidt has been involved in a number of start-up companies focusing on hardware and software product development, strategic & tactical marketing, sales & sales management, distribution channel creation, and strategic business development activities through various executive positions and consulting engagements for a variety of small and large, industrial, computer and telecommunications companies on a world wide basis.  Mr. Schmidt is a native of Colorado Springs, left in 1965 and returned in 1994.  Mr. Schmidt started Ensemble Ventures in 2000, and has worked with a number of local start-up companies.  He is currently the Chair of the Colorado Springs Entrepreneurs Group, past Chairman of the Colorado Springs TPAC (Telecom Policy Advisory Committee), a past Chairman and current member of the Pikes Peak Area County Governments Community Advisory Committee.

About Mike's Talk:  "Of Misar. Mice, Mosaic and Men"

Mr. Schmidt will present an overview of his first start-up company experience with an early pioneering company in the Video Teleconferencing business that was started in the early 1980's in Orange County California called MISAR, (Mass Information Storage and Retrieval).  He will share the high's and low's of his first true "start-up" trial by fire, some early technology and marketing and sales lessons learned, what it took to "jump-out" ahead of the rest of the market with a state-of the art technology solution, and what can happen when you are "too-advanced" technically for a market and don't have a good distribution network in place.  Mr. Schmidt will also demonstrate how to effectively "position" your products and services in a new and emerging market.  There will be lots of multimedia used in this presentation, and you will become an "insider" in terms of knowing where today's modern Video Teleconferencing technology roots originated from.  Actually this is "Chapter One" of the Autobiographical book that Mr. Schmidt has now committed to write after being inspired by Kevin Cullis at last month's CSE Group meeting where he challenged us to write our own books.

5. 1st Guest Start-up Entrepreneur(s) - 5 Minute Pitch - 5 Minute Q&A

Joe Dalton – (Speaking for Dee Dalton) - Wow Mobile
About Joe: representing WoW Mobile, is a proud resident of Colorado Springs since 2001. Following a successful career in the US Air Force, spanning 23 years, 9 months, 13 days, Joe settled into a job in the defense industry. He provides safety and mission assurance services to the Air Force organizations supporting ground-based radar systems. Joe and his wife, Dee, are avid entrepreneurs working with several relationship marketing companies over the years. At the end of 2009, Joe and Dee joined WoW Mobile, a subsidiary of Liberty International. Dee is currently enjoying FREE unlimited cell phone service. Joe is close on her heels. Both are enjoying the benefits of the ground-floor opportunity offered by WoW Mobile.

Dee is originally from El Paso, TX, and after Father's retirement from US Army, settled in Houston, TX. She got married and had 3 kids. Later divorced, then remarried and then had an instant family with total of 8 kids. Dee worked as a cosmetologist for over 25 years, and got the entrepreneurial urge several years ago. She looked at opening her own salon, had $2500 worth of equipment, furniture, etc., but opted against it due to high start up costs and sky-high leases and operating costs she would have had to carry. She then focused on pursuing various multi-level marketing opportunities due to small start up and limited operating costs. She is currently pursuing three different MLM opportunities including Wow Mobile – offering cell phone service at highly competitive rates with the opportunity to get your cell phone service for FREE simply by referring 3 people.

WowMobile

WoW Mobile:

WoW Mobile is a subsidiary of Liberty International.  Liberty is a multi-level marketing company that is 11 years old.  WoW Mobile was launched last year.  It offers highly competitive unlimited voice, text, and data plans ranging from $59.95 to $89.95 per month.  There are no contracts, no credit checks, and fees for overages or dropping the service.  Another fantastic feature of the service is the ability to tether your laptop to the internet using your phone as a WiFi device.  Depending on the model of phone, you can tether up to three computers….and there is no limit to the data services.  Most companies cap their “unlimited” data at 5 Gigabytes.  The service is provided using the T-Mobile network and we are in contract with two other top tier cell phone services.  The biggest selling point for WoW Mobile is the Refer 3 and Yours is FREE business model.

6. 2nd Guest Start-up Entrepreneur - 5 Minute Pitch - 5 Minute Q&A

Ric Rooney - CEO, VisiCal, SSAtlantis, Pikes Peak Hyperbaric
RicRooneyAbout Ric:
Ric Rooney has over 25 years of experience in both the fitness arena and computer field. He joined a small California computer surplus company in the late 80’s as Marketing Director, later becoming a partner where he increased sales from 1.1 million to 6.5 million in 36 months. He then established Rooney & Associates in Colorado Springs and achieved computer sales of 4.5 million within 24 months.  But his love of fitness eventually became the priority in his life and in 1990 he founded MiriCal Corporation where he developed the initial version of the Personal Food Analyst (PFA) software program for Hewlett-Packard’s HP95 palmtop computer and introduced it to the market in 1991 becoming the best selling nutritional analysis program for the HP95.  With the world wide web just coming into its own, Ric formed VisiCal, LLC in 1999 to rewrite the Personal Food Analyst as a web-based program that is now capable of reaching and helping users on a global scale through his unique weight loss and diet education and training service called PhysiqueTransformaion.com that can help you lose weight safely without drugs .  Ric is also a salon owner entering his 15th year in business in Colorado Springs running the Sun Spot Atlantis, one of the longest running indoor tanning businesses in Colorado Springs.  In 2009, Sun Spot Atlantis was selected as one of the “Top 250” tanning salons in the country, by Looking Fit Magazine.
PPHLogoSM

About Ric’s Talk:

Ric will (with support from his new business partner and Son, Jesse) be introducing the CSE Group to a new Hyperbaric Therapy service that he and Jesse are introducing here in Colorado Springs and in Denver next month… It’s called Pikes Peak Hyperbaric.  Ric will share with you his recent decision to enter the health and wellness side of the mild hyperbaric therapy.  Basically, the pressurized environment of a mild hyperbaric chamber helps on three levels, by allowing more oxygen to reach tissues, cells, and body fluids.  The chamber provides up to 300% more oxygen saturation, allowing wounds to heal faster, swelling to be reduced much more quickly, restoration or increased blood flow to injured areas therefore hastening healing, aiding in detoxification and promoting general wellness.  Ric will be giving us a “Sneak Peak” before it is officially launched !

Steve's Talk:
What would you do when you do everything right...and it all goes wrong?  So, when was the last time you met a guy who was sued for $1.4 Billion?  Well, I’m that guy and I’ve written my story about living the American dream.  My book shares the fun, excitement and pure exhilaration of building a successful company.
BookSteve shares the fun, energy, and excitement of creating an extremely successful travel company from scratch.  In less than a year from going public, the company had grown to over 300 travel agencies and $500 million in revenues and included major business partners like Kmart and Playboy enterprises. But, after tremendous success, Steve also shares the shock, pain, and deep despair as he watched helplessly while the company and his life vaporized before his eyes.  There is a right way and a wrong way to fail.   It all begins and ends with ethics, and ethics should not be situational. 5. 1st Guest Start-up Entrepreneur(s) - 5 Minute Pitch - 5 Minute Q&A

Brian Smith, Principal - Groovz Design

About Brian:

Brian Smith is a student of innovation, especially as it relates to manufacturing techniques and processes. A mechanical engineer by trade, he's been working in the manufacturing sector for 10 years. Among his areas of fascination is the concept of lean manufacturing, reduction of anything not contributing to value of the product throughout the manufacturing process. Brian sees a niche market where he takes an idea from a conceptual sketch through the stages of product development, implementing lean production ideas and methods throughout.

Brian's Talk:

"Getting in the Groovz" - Groovz Design works to introduce the innovators in this market to innovative manufacturing techniques, innovative manufacturing processes, even innovative manufacturing and business models. It is the strategy of Groovz Design to work along with innovators to put a novel idea through a proven system that results in the lean production of a finished product, integrating the distribution system and business methods of choice.

Our December 2009 Meetup and Holiday Mixer !

To all CSE Group Members:

Well, we have reached the end of 2009, hopefully all in one piece after a somewhat "rocky" year both professionally and personally for many of us who may have experienced a slow down or drop-off in business, have a personal financial challenge facing them, or generally struggled in this economic "down-turn" we have all had to endure...  Hopefully 2010 will bring an uptick in the general mood of the country and allow us all to begin to build our businesses up again.

In our final end of year meetup this month, I would like to invite you all (as well as guests) to our December 2009 Meetup and Holiday Mixer where we can share some food and fun, and reflect back over the year's high's and low's, and starting laying plans for the new year by doing some serious "holiday networking" and meeting some new business contacts, and learning some new tips and techniques to help you business grow.

So take a look at our December 2009 Meetup Group Agenda below and be sure to log into the Meetup Site and RSVP for your attendance... http://www.meetup.com/colospgsbiz
